How to learn management and supervisor characteristics and qualities in order to manage and supervisor construction safely!
Over the past 16 years I have attended numerous SMSTS and Director’s H&S courses. I confess I attended because it was a professional requirement and have found the content of these courses invaluable. The providers have delivered the content efficiently and effectively and I have left these courses informed of:
- Current H&S and Welfare legislation
- Where to access H&S Welfare information
- When my certificate renewal date was
The UK construction industry, has chosen these CITB courses as ‘the’ required H.S.& W training for site managers and construction site supervisors and with the CSCS cards, these courses and cards have become ‘the’ passports to employment.
The CITB have extended the SMSTS /SSSTS range to encompass site labourers and company directors. These courses inform across the board on what the H&S legal requirements are of those involved in the UK construction industry. However, knowing something and being able to do something are not the same. Therefore we have the NVQ assessment system which confirms that an employee at their level of employment is able to operate correctly at their level of employment. Neither the NVQ assessed process, or the CITB H&S courses teach how to Direct, Manage or Supervise construction operations.
The second point to be noted is that these courses run at 5 yearly intervals and I believe that this interval is too great. The HSE recommends that asbestos awareness training is refreshed annually and yet H. S & W training for those managing and supervising construction sites is renewed / refreshed every 5 years?
At RivaSure with our Managing and Supervising online safety GAP courses we have addressed the following issues:
- How to manage and supervise safely
- How to refresh management and supervisory training cost effectively
- How to accomplish both of the above without having to take time off work!
