An NVQ is a National Vocational Qualification. It is the process by which a practicing professional with a minimum of three years experience is awarded recognition and a qualification for the job they are doing, without having to to go back to school or take time off work!
Each candidate is given a personal NVQ assessor. The assessor’s job is to give the guidance and support necessary for the candidate to evidence his working history at the correct level / standard. It’s not rocket science and if there are parts of the process which are unclear, it is the assessor’s responsibility to bring clarity and understanding.
The standard, or standards of each NVQ are met by a variety of means such as a Knowledge questionnaire, assessor report and or professional discussion, copies or certs., qualifications and site documentation. The standards of all qualifications are set by national awarding bodies such as the CITB or EDEXCEL. These qualifications are recognised throughout the world!
The process is a profiling exercise which is carried out in a systematic fashion, led by the assessor. Management and Supervisory NVQs are primarily evidenced with documentation online and trade NVQs primarily by assessor observation.
There are two aspects of a candidates working life which are assessed, that which they do and that which they know. These are known as the knowledge and performance criteria.
The assessor is there to assist, assess and to ensure that eligible candidates gain their qualifications as efficiently as possible.
The assessor works for a registered provider such as a training college or independant registered provider and the evidence as amassed by the assessor is placed in a portfolio which is sanctioned by the awarding body through the provider.
Candidates that achieve a construcion management NVQ 6 or 7 are eligible for MCIOB status throuth the CIOB professional review system. Achieving MCIOB status is to be applauded. MCIOB is the best way of evidencing a construction manager’s historical commitment and professional expertise in and to the construction industry.
It is also to be noted that in our opinion, NVQ Management Certificate holders and CIOB members at MCIOB level often command the best management salaries and positions and therefore we are of the opinion that completing a Construction Management NVQ is worth doing!
